John Burton was born in Aberdare, Glamorganshire where he enlisted for Great War service with the Shropshire Light Infantry. He served as a Private in the 1st Battalion, disembarking at France with his Regiment on 8 December 1915. Burton served on the Western Front for only a few months before he was tragically killed in action on 22 April 1916, aged just 22 years old. He is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, and his pension was claimed by his widowed mother, Mary Ann, and brother James; sold together with copied research.
