James Edward Frank Shefford was born at Lambeth, London in 1896 and attested on 11 April 1913. Embodied on 5 August 1914 and posted to Malta on 13 September, the Battalion, including Shefford, entered the war in France on 6 January 1915.
The Battalion was in the line at Gommecourt on the opening of the Somme Offensive and Shefford was diagnosed with shell shock on 4 July 1916, the day after they left the front. Spending some time in the reserve they returned to the front in September for service in the Battle of Ginchy. While there Shefford suffered a gunshot wound in left knee and humorous on 11 September 1916.
He returned to Britain but the wound proved too much to recover from and he was discharged on 21 December 1917.
