Thomas Henry Smith was born at The Roundings, Hertford Heath, Hertfordshire on 14 July 1886. He enlisted in the 2/16th London Regiment on 9 November 1914 and during the war served in France from 22 June to November 1916 and later in Salonika and Egypt until the end of the war.

Smith was Mentioned in Despatches on 21 July 1917 and was wounded on 6 November 1917 at Gaza, receiving a gunshot wound to the right shoulder. He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on 1 February 1918 and was subsequently advanced to Acting Captain; sold together with copied service papers and photos of Smith in Egypt.
