Ernest Joseph Taylor was commissioned Second Lieutenant on 26 September 1917 and entered the war in France on 4 June 1918 and was attached to the 1/8th Battalion based at the Essars Area in July 1918. He was wounded in the leg on 5 September 1918 when a 4.2 inch shell made a direct hit on Battalion Headquarters and consequently he was eligible for a Silver War Badge.
The 1/8th Battalion History states:
"Battalion H.Q. got a direct hit with a 4.2 shell and the whole of the Headquarters Staff were hit. The result was disastrous; every officer in it was wounded 2nd/Lieutenant E. J. Taylor (Works Officer) was wounded in the leg".
Taylor applied for his medals in 1922 and became an architect and lived at The Birklands, Matlock Bath, Derbyshire, and died on 5 November 1947.
