Reaching his majority with Majestic he was appointed Ordinary Seaman in 1902 and advanced Able Seaman with the same vessel the next year. In this rank he joined the crew of the Battleship Formidable in 1906 and was still with her the next year when she won the Naval Good Shooting Medal for her 12 Pound Quick Firing guns.
Perrett was serving with Irresistible on the outbreak of the Great War but removed to the Battlecruiser Queen Elizabeth on 19 March 1915. At this stage she was stationed in the Dardanelles, after he joined the crew she made a number of unsuccessful attempts to force the passage. After it was decided to end these efforts they returned to Britain where she was to remain for the rest of the war.
