John Newton was born at Uxbridge, Middlesex in 1870 and attested on 1 December 1890. He saw seven years of service in India prior to the Anglo-Boer War, arriving in South Africa on 23 October 1899 and serving until August 1902. Returning to Britain Newton saw three more months of service and was discharged in November 1902.
