Arthur Bibbings was born at St Marys, Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales in 1894 and attested at Newport on 26 June 1894. Posted to 2nd Depot Division which was later to the Royal Field Artillery, while serving with this unit he suffered a sprained ankle and 'wound' to his forehead in 1894, likely the result of an accident.

Bibbings was posted to No 62 Battery, Royal Field Artillery on 1 July 1899 as Sergeant, with them he was posted to South Africa in 1899. This unit was part of General Methuen's column which advanced to release Kimberly early in the Anglo-Boer War. Seeing action at the Battle of Modder River they withdrew with the column after the reverse at Magersfontien but were stationed at Koodosberg Drift in February 1900 to prevent the Boers threatening the British supply lines.

There they fought an action under General MacDonald duelling with and suppressing a Boer Long Tom until Boer reinforcements arrived at which point a withdrawal was ordered. Returning to Kimberly they saw action at the Battle of Paardeburg after which the unit was divided between two columns. The Regiment sailed for India in 1901 however Bibbings remained in South Africa, earning a King's South Africa medal and was transferred to the reserve on 15 August 1902.

He was discharged from the Army Reserve at his own request on 18 January 1904; sold together with copied research.
