Charles Edward Burns was born at Bermondsey in 1880 and was a labourer upon his joining The Queen's Regiment in April 1899. He served in South Africa with the 2nd Battalion from 15 April 1901-7 June 1904, noted as having been with the 22nd Battalion Mounted Infantry, one of the Composite Regiments of Mounted Infantry. Burns was discharged on 16 April 1904.
