Joseph Clay was born at St. Mary's, Nottingham and had served with the 4th Battalion, Derbyshire Regiment before he joined the Grenadier Guards on 29 August 1883. He arrived in the Sudan on 20 February 1885 and completed his service on 28 August 1886, joining the Army Reserve on 29 August 1886.
