Alexander McDonald was born in 1853 at St Andrews, Manitoba, just west of the Red River, the eldest son of Donald McDonald. He was from a family of Métis heritage and served alongside his brothers John (born 1856) and Donald (born 1860) in the Manitoba Contingent.
