George James Sly was born at Portsea, Hampshire on 1 April 1838, the son of George and Mary Sly. He married Miss Ellen Elizabeth Horn on 7 June 1859 at the Catholic Chapel, Portsea Island and was listed at that time as a Steward in the Royal Navy, living at 39 Somers Street, Southsea, Hampshire. Joining Himalaya on 1 January 1873 with the service number 76720 he was present with her during the Ashantee Campaign.
Serving until 30 September 1889 he appeared upon the 1891 census living in West Street, Havant with his wife and two daughters. By 1911 he was a widower and living as a boarder with the family of Thomas Cleife at 13 Frederick Street, Portsmouth. Sly died on 19 September 1917 at 50 Princes Stret, Landport of senile decay and bedsore syncope; sold with copied research to include copies of birth, marriage and death certificates.
