Robert Boyce enlisted in Ireland with the 49th Foot on 19 June 1848. The Regiment was stationed in the Ionian Islands from 1851 and joined the Malta Garrison in 1853 where they were still stationed upon the outbreak of the Crimean War.
The Battalion saw heavy action during the Battle of Inkermann, where they were part of the 2nd Division facing General Soimonov's thrust. During the fighting two members of the Regiment were awarded the Victoria Cross. Discharged on 19 September 1858 he re-enlisted with the 19th Foot in October 1858 and was again discharged after ten years service in October 1869.
