Handal Nicholls was born in Westerleigh, Gloucester and at age 18 attested for the 40th Brigade on 29 May 1877 at Portsmouth after working as a miner. Nicholls joined the 4th Brigade, 67th (South Hampshire) Regiment of Foot as a Private on 1 June and was promoted Lance Corporal just a few months later on 9 October. He was advanced Corporal the next year on 5 February.

Later that year, Nicholls embarked for the East Indies with his Regiment on 12 December 1878 and was stationed there until 25 February 1884; spending six years abroad. While abroad, Nicholls served in the Afghanistan campaign in 1878-79 and was promoted Sergeant on 14 March 1882.

Shortly after his return to England, he transferred to the Army Reserve on 9 March 1884 and married Emma Jane Morgan at Gosport on 27 May 1884. The next year on 20 April, Nicholls was voluntarily re-mobilised for duty and soon after advanced Quartermaster Sargeant on 27 May. A few years later on 30 April 1888, he re-engaged with the Hampshire Regiment at Winchester to complete a total service of 21 years. Nicholls received his L.S. & G.C. medal in October 1895.

Nicholls was finally discharged on 2 September 1898 at Fort Brockhurst, Gosport, having served an impressive 21 years with the colours. His conduct was described as 'regular, exemplary, temperate'; sold together with copied service record.
