(x) Pair: Private T. Whyte, 2nd Dragoons (Scots Greys), a Heavy Brigade Charger
Crimea 1854-56, 3 clasps, Balaklava, Inkermann, Sebastopol (Pve Thos White 2nd D), engraved in upright capitals; Turkish Crimea 1855, British issue, fitted with ring suspension, mounted as worn with decorative rectangular plaque with single vertical pin to reverse, note spelling of Whyte, contact marks to both, otherwise toned very fine (2)
Provenance:
Acquired from the family in New Zealand, who at one stage had apparently sold them separately to different collectors.
Thomas Whyte was born circa 1833 and appears on the Balaklava clasp roll as Whyte (No. 144) and White (No. 144) on the Sebastopol roll, with further original documentation listing him as Whyte. He was admitted to Out-Pension on 30 December 1856 and granted a Temporary Pension from 10 January 1857 and at that time was living in Edinburgh. He later appeared in the Roll of Honour Defenders of the Empire 1840-1903, resident in New Zealand compiled by the Earl of Ranfurly. Strangely there were two identical entries: one for someone living in Napier and the other living in Wellington, however this was the same person appearing twice.
