British War Medal 1914-20 (Lieut. H. F. Fox.), good very fine

Harold Francis Box born at 28 February 1895 at Gray, his father being the local vicar. Educated at Keble College, Oxford, he joined in Michaelmas Term 1914 and having passed through the O.T.C., was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant into the 5th Battalion, Essex Regiment on 28 March 1915. Attached to the Royal Engineers in 1918 he was in command of a signalling company on the Western Front. Box was killed by a shell on 29 October 1918, whilst sheltering in a bivouac from shell fire near Valenciennes. It was just two weeks before War's end.

Box is buried in the Crucific Cemetery, Vendegies-Sur-Ecaillon and further commemorated upon the St Alban The Martyr Memorial, Westcliff-on-Sea, Keble College Memorial and Brighton War Memorial.
