James Francis Gadd was born on 22 February 1895, and was educated at the Royal Wolverhampton School where he served in the O.T.C.. He was commisioned into the South Staffordshire Regiment on 1 November 1914 and entered the war in France on 24 August 1915 serving with the 9th Battalion and was made Temporary Lieutenant on 16 January 1916. Gadd was wounded for the first time on 3 October 1916. He was made Temporary Captain on 20 July 1917 and was wounded a second time on 4 October 1917.
He embarked for Italy from France, arriving on 17 November 1917. Gadd was given leave to the U.K. between 5-19 July 1918 and returned back to Italy on completion. He had further leave between 1-7 October 1918 but remained in Italy. He received further leave this time to the U.K. between 11-25 December 1918, this continued to be extended. He was 'mentioned' for distinguished service at Rorai Grande, Italy (London Gazette 6 January 1919) and was finally demobilized on 28 February 1919.
