Frederick Newman was born in Maldon and worked as a labourer until attesting with the Royal Artillery at age 19 on 15 November 1893 at Great Yarmouth. He was posted to India on 9 October 1894 and served there for eleven years. One year after his arrival in India, Newman was tried and imprisoned in October 1895 for unknown reasons. He finally returned home on 16 December 1905 and was discharged just two days after his return to England with 'indifferent' character upon the termination of his limited period of engagement; sold together with copied service record, which confirms his entitlement to this medal and clasp combination.
