Alfred Dear was born in London and worked as a servant before attesting for general infantry service at Weymouth on 14 July 1877 at age 20. He was posted to the 1st Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment and stationed in the East Indies, where he disembarked on 5 October 1878. Dear returned to the United Kingdom three years later on 3 March 1882. He again embarked for overseas service, arriving in the Mediterranean a few months later on 11 September. Dear was not to stay there long, however, and returned to the United Kingdom just 33 days later. On 1 March 1883, Dear extended his service with the Colours to 12 years' service.
Once again posted to the Mediterranean, he began what was to be just under a year of service there on 4 May 1885. From the Mediterranean, Dear was sent to Egypt on 12 February 1886, where he remained until returning home for the last time later that same year on 10 August. He was discharged at Gosport upon the termination of the second period of engagement; sold together with copied service record, which details his entitlement to this medal and clasp combination.
