Sir W.M. Flinders Petrie (1853-1942)
1903 Two autograph letters (one incomplete) written by Petrie, the renowned Egyptologist, from Baliana, a small village near Beni-Suef, to Canon Rawnsby giving an opinion as to Rawnsby's son, who was working for Petrie. He thanks him for a glowing review of "Royal Tombs of the Earliest Dynasties", published in 1901. "I read with much pleasure seeing how you had put life into the dry bones which I had collected".
Only the signed second page of the additional letter has survived, in which Petrie gives his opinion of Egyptian workers. "I have an excellent opinion of the Egyptian when under authority, but he cannot stand temptation." (2)
