(x) A collection of contemporary papers, pamphlets and documents relating to the Royal Navy
Bound guidebook entitled ‘Signals and Instructions in Addition to the General Printed Sailing and Fighting Instructions’, detailing signal and fighting instructions for different weather conditions and times of day, undated, some wear to cover otherwise in good condition;
Selection of bound pages likely removed from larger book, pages entitled ‘The Present System of Naval Tactics’ including figurative illustrations, undated, one page loose and damage to spine where removed, ageing;
Five pages removed from book which relate to ‘Rules for training Oak Trees to Compass Shapes, for Naval Purposes’, pages written by William Randall at Maidstone, 21 January 1795, includes diagrams, light ageing, in very good condition for age;
Pamphlet, ‘A Reply to A Pamphlet intituled “A Brief Enquiry into the Present Condition of the Navy of Great Britain”: wherein is clearly demonstrated The Force of the Enemy, and what was opposed to it by the Late Board of Admiralty; as well as the actual strength possessed by the King’s dock-yards, and their ability to keep up and encrease the Navy without the aid of merchant builders’, printed in London 1804, handwritten text at top reads ‘From the Author’, large folding table at end, age stains, text otherwise clear and legible;
Parliamentary Act ‘for appointing Commissioners to enquire and examine into any Irregularities, Frauds or Abuses which are or have been practiced by Persons employed in the several Naval Departments therein mentioned’, dated 5 June 1805, pages removed from larger books, small holes, especially along binding, text clear and legible;
A bound hardcover book ‘Naval Papers Respecting Copenhagen, Portugal, and the Dardanelles, Presented to Parliament in 1808’, printed in London 1809, foxing and age stains, wear to page edges, damage to spine, but text legible and pages all apparently present;
Pamphlet entitled ‘An Essay addressed to Captains of the Royal Navy and those of the Merchants’ Service; on the Means of Preserving The Health Of Their Crews: with directions for the prevention of Dry Rot In Ships’, written by Royal Navy surgeon Robert Finlayson M.D., printed in London 1825, removed from larger bound book, in very good condition for its age (7)
