(x) Collection of five Royal Navy commissioning documents, featuring signatures from Earl St. Vincent and Admirals Samuel Hood, James Gambier, Alan Gardner and Thomas Troubridge, among others, Commissions dated 1791-1801

Naval Commission appointing Captain Richard Goodwin Keats to H.M.S. Niger, signed by Hood and Gardner, dated 27 August 1791; Naval Commission appointing John Chambers White, Esq. to Captain H.M.S. Windsor Castle, signed by Gambier and dated 2 August 1799; Naval Commission appointing Captain Charles William Paterson to H.M.S. St. Fiorenzo, dated 29 October 1800; Naval Commission appointing Captain Richard Raggett to H.M.S. Royal Sovereign, signed by Gambier and dated 24 January 1801; Naval Commission appointing Lieutenant Hendrick Hoopt to the Dutch ship Guelderland, signed by St. Vincent and Troubridge, and dated 2 July 1801; each on vellum, four with Admiralty seal, some creasing, folds and light staining but overall good condition, clear and legible (5)

Admiral Sir Richard Goodwin Keats fought in the American War of Independence and throughout the Napoleonic Wars. Keats was described by Nelson as “one of the very best officers in His Majesty’s Navy”, and sailed in Nelson’s fleet during his voyage to the West Indies in 1805.
