(x) A collection of seven Royal Navy surgeon’s documents, including two wound certificates, one of which was issued to a Royal Marine Officer wounded in action on 20 October 1808 during the Gunboat War

Document addressed to the Commissioners for Sick and Wounded Seaman signed by John Cole, surgeon at H.M. Royal Naval Hospital in Antigua, detailing that he has “drawn a Sett of Bills on your Board, in favour of… Lord Lavington”, also signed by Lord Lavington to the reverse, dated 1 October 1803, in very good condition for age, light staining;

Letter written and signed by Sir Gilbert Blane, Commissioner of the Sick and Wounded Admiralty Board, discussing the medical case of Miss Magra and advising her medicines to be sent to Naples, dated 30 June 1804, some contemporary ink smudges otherwise clear and legible;

Wound certificate issued to James Garcy(?), a 28-year-old Ordinary Seaman who was wounded whilst serving aboard H.M.S. Pique from a blow while “heaving down the ship” at Port Royal, Jamaica on 16 August 1805, signed by Captain Charles Ross (future Vice Admiral) and Surgeon John McCleod, among others, dated 26 August 1807, reverse features detail from McCleod explaining delay in issue of Certificate, printed on vellum, text somewhat fading and in parts difficult to read, ageing and some tears along upper margin;

Wound Certificate issued to Lieutenant J. G. Richardson, Royal Marines, who was wounded when H.M.S. Africa went into “action with 25 Danish Gunboats off Drago” on 20 October 1808, suffering wounds to his face, left arm and thigh, Certificate signed by Captain John Barrett and the ship’s surgeon, printed on vellum, parts of text are somewhat faded and thus difficult to read, some ageing, overall legible;

Letter to the Surgeon of H.M. Naval Hospital at Port Royal discussing the spread of sickness aboard H.M.S. Daedalus with some crew to be invalided to Hospital, signed by Vice Admiral Joshua Rowley aboard H.M.S. Polyphemus and dated 29 December 1808, some ageing and stains, reverse paper loss caused by seal, some tears and other wear but text is clear and legible;

Naval Order for survey of medical stores on H.M. Store Ship Hindostan ahead of the appointment of a new surgeon, signed by Admiral Sir Roger Curtis and dated 15 March 1809, ageing and stains otherwise very good condition;

Certificate confirming that Mr. James Graham served as Surgeon on board H.M.S. Venerable from 11 August 1810 until 30 June 1811, signed by Captain (future Rear Admiral) Home Popham aboard Venerable, dated 30 June 1811, light folds and ageing, otherwise in very good condition (7)
