Auction: 25003 - Orders, Decorations and Medals
Lot: 93
(x) A Royal Navy Midshipman's Dirk, of late 18th or early 19th Century manufacture, featuring a sharply-curved blade, this engraved with foliate decoration and the Spanish Coat of Arms, profusely decorated gilt-brass hilt with depictions of Medusa on the langets, gilt-brass scabbard, dual suspension rings, with foliate decoration and engraved eagle and snake, by Richd. Blachford & Co., 67 Lombard St., London, traces of gilt remaining to hilt and scabbard, total length 470mm, an attractive and intriguing example, good very fine
The Spanish Coat of Arms upon the blade, of the style in use circa 1700 - 1868, together with a well-fitting and matching British scabbard, suggests this was a repurposed piece - perhaps a captured trophy of war.
