M.I.D. London Gazette 20 June 1941:

'For distinguished services in Waziristan during the period 1 January-31 December 1940.'

John William Grant entered the Great War in Egypt with the 12th Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry (Pair only), being wounded in action on 26 January & 3 October 1918 (War Office Daily List No. 5476 & 5686, refer) and was demobilised on 18 November 1919. Rejoining the Army, he earned his L.S. & G.C. in 1935 and saw further service during the Second World War. He began with the 1st Battalion on the North-West Frontier, being awarded one of just two 'mentions' to his unit, the other going to Brigadier Harding.

Harding was commissioned Lieutenant (Q.M.) in March 1941, raised Captain (Q.M.) during the Second World War and earned a second 'mention' (London Gazette 8 November 1945, refers) for North-West Europe and eventually confirmed as Lieutenant in February 1952, remaining on the General List until 1956.
