Jack Barker was born in October 1899 and was a native of Tooting, London. He served initially with the Machine Gun Corps before being discharged and re-enlisting on 1 September 1939 with No. 1 Reserve (Motor) Company, Royal Army Service Corps as a Corporal. Joining the British Forces in Africa initially he was later posted to Greece, following the successful German invasion in April 1941 he was taken prisoner 'near Athens' on 28 April, the day after the city fell.
Taken initially to Corinth, Barker was transferred to a camp at Wolfenberg in Austria. There is some slight confusion with dates here as Barker's prisoner questionnaire placed him working on the Maria Saal Railway from 4 March 1941 until 3 April 1942, but this is presumably an error. He was transferred to Hulen Fels in Bavaria on 6 April 1942 and remained there until he was repatriated at the end of the conflict; sold together with a Bulford Garrison 1928-29 Hockey Cup hallmarked silver Medal and clasps (8) for a road safety medal.
