Walter Frederick Perfitt entered the war in France on 10 November 1915 as a Sergeant with the 21st (Service) Battalion, Manchester Regiment. Perfitt reached the rank of Warrant Officer II and was then commissioned into the Manchester Regiment on 11 April 1917.

Perfitt applied for his campaign medals in July 1925 and these were duly issued on 7 August 1925 and were sent to 38 Bosworth Street, Openshaw, Manchester with a previous address given as 20 Cheltenham Road, Cheadle Heath, Cheshire.
