Afghanistan 1878-80, 1 clasp, Peiwar Kotal (1070. Pte. J. Bell. 2/8th Regt.), very fine

John Bell was born on 21 June 1857 in West Preston, Lancashire, the son of James Bell, a railway engine feeder, and his wife Martha. The younger Bell served for four years in the 5th Royal Lancashire Militia, from September 1872 until March 1876. He was a carter by trade ahead of his enlistment with the 13th Brigade at Manchester on 28 November 1876 when he was nineteen years old.

After a year of service at home, Bell was posted to India with his Regiment on 23 September 1877. From India he was sent to Afghanistan to serve in the Second Afghan War. He was stationed in Afghanistan from 21 November 1878 until 22 October 1880, serving nearly the whole of the campaign. He returned to India directly from Afghanistan that October and continued to serve there until returning home to England in May 1883. Upon his return home Bell joined the Army Reserve on 6 August 1883. However, he was remobilised and rejoined the 1/Liverpool Regiment on 6 May 1885. Bell served with them for but a few months before returning to the Reserve on 30 September the same year. He was later discharged from the Reserve at Warrington on 22 November 1888 upon the termination of his limited period of engagement. After his discharge, Bell intended to reside at 7 Back Temple Street in Rochdale; sold together with copied research.
