Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., (1506. Cr Sgt E.Baldwin.E.Surr:R.); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., short letter reverse (1484 Serj John Rigney 49 Reg 1859), the second with unofficially re-engraved naming in upright capitals, contact marks, edge bruising, about very fine (2)

Edward Baldwin was born in 1854 at Pembroke Docks, Wales and attested with the 31st Foot at Rochester in 1869 at age 14, he was posted to Gibraltar in 1872 and remained there until 1876. In 1891, he was promoted Colour Sergeant upon the amalgamation of the 31st Foot with the 70th Foot to form the East Surrey Regiment. Baldwin returned to Gibraltar in 1982 until the Regiment was ordered to India in 1884, where they were stationed until 1889. While serving in India, Baldwin was issued his L.S. & G.C. Medal in 1887 as well as a Sergeant Instructor of Musketry Certificate. In 1889, he joined the Oxford Light Infantry as a Sergeant Instructor in the 1st Bucks Rifle Volunteer Corps and the next year was promoted Acting Sergeant Major. Baldwin was discharged at Oxford in 1902 after having served for 33 years; sold together with copied research.

John Rigney was born in 1820 in Newton, West Meath and enlisted in the 49th Foot in 1840 at Edinburgh, disembarking at Hong Kong in 1842. He was appointed Corporal in 1849 and did not participate in the Crimea War, with records showing him as being at the Depots in Cork and Fermony from 1854 to 1856. Rigney was made Sergeant in 1854 and his Regiment was posted to Barbados from 1857 until 1860, during which time he was issued his L.S. & G.C. Medal, recommended with £5 gratuity. He was discharged at Weymouth in October 1861 and afterwards lived in Gloucester with his wife and children; sold together with copied research.
