William Alfred Rann was born at Ryde, Isle of Wight on 11 January 1879 and was a doorman when he joined the Royal Marine Artillery on 23 August 1897. Awarded his Long Service & Good Conduct Medal on 23 September 1912, he served in the Great War and was aboard Warrior at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916.
Along with Defence this ship undertook a made rush to attack the crippled Wiesbaden. In doing so they found themselves under the guns of four German Battleships and the Battlecruiser Derfflinger. Defence exploded after the second salvo but Warrior proved the equal of the battering. She would not have lasted long however were it not for Warspite whose crippled steering brought her beneath the German guns, they were unable to resist the temping target and switch their fire. During the bombardment Warrior suffered many casualties including Rann who was wounded in action.
Despite surviving she was severely damaged and sank later that night, with the crew taken aboard the aircraft tender Engadine. Rann was on 23 May 1919 he died on 11 September 1926; sold together with copied research.
