George William King enlisted with the Royal Berkshire Regiment in April 1915 and joined the 2nd Royal Berkshire Regiment in France that October, serving in the 25th Brigade, 8th Division throughout the war. They were on the front line at Bois Grenier and again near Fleurbaix in the later months of 1915 and in early 1916. The unit was then stationed in the Somme sector before joining the Battle of Passchendaele in July 1917. They took an active role at the Battle of Langemarck in August where they attacked the Iron Cross and Anzac Redoubts, with a number of men of the Regiment awarded gallantry medals. King was one of fourteen men to have his Military Medal awarded to him in consequence of this engagement and was gazetted the following November; sold together with copied research.
