Montague Hart was born in Manchester on 6 January 1895 and lived at 56 Eversley Street Princes Road, Liverpool prior to enlistment. Joining the 1/6th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool) Regiment with the service number 1672, being promoted Sergeant prior to entering the war in France on 24 February 1915.
Serving with 'A' Company he saw service at the Battle of Hill 60 under the command of Major Wedgwood. Not long after Hart received his award the Battalion was engaged in the Battle of Cambrai. Here he was taken prisoner while serving with 'C' Company at Le Quesney on 30 November 1917.
