A 'Battle of the Somme 1916' casualty's pair awarded to Private T. Alvery, 10th Battalion, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment who was killed in action on 8 August 1916

Tom Alvey was born at Pleasley Hill, Nottinghamshire in 1877 and appears in the 1911 census at 19 Gas Hill, Pleasley Hill, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire working as a coal hewer's loader. Enlisting on 7 September 1914, he entered the war at Gallipoli at some stage prior to 31 December 1915.
Returning to Britain, Alvey was posted to the 10th Battalion and entered the war in France. He was still with the Battalion when they moved into the line on 5 August during the Somme Offensive to relieve a Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment. They received the order to attack Delville Wood on 8 August, making their assault at 16:30 but were halted by machine gun fire.
'D' and 'C' companies made their objectives but otherwise the attack was unsuccessful, a second attempt at midnight also failed. Alvey was killed during the fighting and is commemorated upon the Thiepval Memorial.
