William Clements Ward was born at Kempsey, Worcestershire in April 1886, the son of William and Emily Blisset of 51 Napleton Lane, Kempsey. Ward was married at Sparkbrook, Christ Church, Warwickshire on 25 December 1908 and was listed in 1911 as living with his wife at 23 Dearman Road, Sparkbrook, Birmingham while working as an Ironmonger's Shop Assistant.
Called up for service with the 2/7th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry Ward was posted to the 9th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment in July 1917 with the new service number 204315. The Battalion went into the line the next month near Ypres, they found themselves required to go into the line on 2 August.
Unfortunately, poor weather had flooded the trenches and they were required to go overland to reach the frontline. Under heavy shell fire all the while the formation suffered losses of 20 men killed and wounded, including Ward. Initially listed as wounded and missing he was later confirmed killed in action and is commemorated upon the Menin Gate Memorial.
