A 'Battle of the Somme 1916' casualty's pair awarded to Lance-Corporal H. Jackson, 19th (St. Pancras) Battalion, London Regiment, who died of wounds on 16 August 1916

Harold Jackson was born at Grays, Essex in October 1891, the son of Alfred and Charlotte Jackson of 78 Cromwell Road, Grays, Essex. He initially enlisted there with the Royal Fusiliers with the service number 612805.

Jackson was later transferred to the 19th (St. Pancras) Battalion, London Regiment with the new number 6629. Jackson was wounded at some stage early in August 1918 and died of his wounds on 8 August, being buried at Warlincourt Halte British Cemetery, Saulty.

The Grays and Tilbury Gazette ran an article on his death which read:

'GRAYS MAN DIES OF WOUNDS.

Information has been received that Lance-Coprl. H. Jackson. Middlesex Regt. of 78, Cromwell Road, Grays has died of wounds received in action, after having been at the front only a few weeks. He joined the Army in March, and was wounded on August 14th, dying in hospital subsequently.'

Sold together with copied research including Commonwealth War Graves Certificate, newspaper clippings, Soldier's Died in the Great War entry and photographs of war memorials in Little Thurrock and Grays both of which bear the recipient's name.
