The Great War campaign pair awarded to Private T. E. Sabin, 14th (1st Birmingham) Battalion, Royal Warwickshire Regiment, who was killed in action on 27 September 1918
British War and Victory Medals (36113 Pte. T. E. Sabin. R. War. R.), good very fine (2)
Thomas Edward Sabin was born at Gloucester in July 1899, the son of Joseph and Eliza Sabin of 132 Broadwell Road, Oldbury, Gloucestershire. Enlisting at Smethwick, Staffordshire he entered the war at some stage after 1916 and entered the conflict, being posted to the 14th (1st Birmingham) Battalion, The Birmingham Pals.
This unit served in Italy in 1917 but returned to France in April 1918 for service on the Western Front. They were present at Haplincourt in late September, taking part in the Hundred Days Offensive. An attack was planned for 27 September in concert with the Royal West Kents.
This went extremely poorly with all three company commanders in the first wave killed in action and the 190 other ranks becoming casualties. Despite the high allied losses the British discovered the next day that the Germans were abandoning their positions and withdrawing. Sabin however was not to see this, having been killed in action, he is commemorated upon the Vis-en-Artois memorial; sold together with copied research.
