John McIlroy was born in Belfast. When the Great War broke out he was living in Albany, Western Australia and proceeded home to enlist in Belfast. He went overseas to France on 22 April 1915 and was killed in action whilst serving with the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles on 16 June 1915 and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. He was the son of David and Catherine Geraldine McIlroy of Blackstock, South Carolina, U.S.A. and the husband of Emily Hester McIlroy of Cuthbert St., Albany, Western Australia.
The lot includes a photograph of him in uniform and a cap badge, together with a photocopied newspaper cutting from the Daily News (Peth W.Australia) from 12 July 1915 confirming his death.
