The Great War 'trio' awarded to Captain G. C. Hollis, 6th Royal Berkshire Regiment, who suffered a serious wound to his hand at the Battle of Ypres

1914-15 Star (2.Lieut. G.C. Hollis. R.Berks.R.); British War and Victory Medals, with M.I.D. oak leaves (Capt. G. C. Hollis.), mounted Court-style as worn, toning, light contact marks, otherwise good fine (3)

Geoffrey Charles Hollis was born in Windsor in 1881 and was educated at University College London before working in mine management, which necessitated travel to a variety of places including Italy, Portugal, Mexico and Transylvania.

Hollis became 2nd Lieutenant upon the outbreak of the Great War and was posted to France in July 1915 with the 6th Royal Berkshire Regiment, 53rd Brigade, 18th Division. He was mentioned in dispatches by Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig in January 1917 for 'distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty.'

Hollis was in command of 'A' Company at the Battle of Ypres when they bombed southwards from the western edge of Glencourse Wood. Later at Ypres, during the attack on Poelcappel, Hollis suffered a serious wound which resulted in the permanent disuse of his hand.

In February 1918 the Regiment was disbanded, and after the war Hollis was discharged as Captain and issued a Silver War Badge. During the Second World War, he was unable to find work in mining and instead found employment at the National Coal Board. Living in Kingston-upon-Thames, Hollis continued working at the National Coal Board until his retirement and died on 25 May 1959; sold together with copied research.
