Ernest Edward Clive Burroughs was born in 1892 in Poringland, Norwich. He attested as a Private with the Royal Berkshire Regiment at East Ham in September 1914 and was shortly afterwards posted to the 8th Battalion alongside his brother Robert. He disembarked at Le Havre in August 1915 and first saw action at the Battle of Loos where tragically his brother was killed in action. Robert was later commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
Burroughs was promoted Corporal ahead of the Regiment's involvement in the attacks on Mametz Wood, Bazetin and High Wood during the Somme, and afterwards was made Sergeant. Before the Battle of Passchendaele, Burroughs was appointed Acting Company Quartermaster Sergeant but later relinquished this rank, reverting to Sergeant. Burroughs returned home briefly as a candidate for temporary commission, where he began instruction with an Officer Cadet Unit and was married in London. He rejoined his unit in the field in April 1918 but was soon posted to the 3rd Special Reserve Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment at Dublin as a Sergeant. Burroughs returned to France in July and was transferred to the 14th Worcestershire Regiment in August. He was transferred to the Army Reserve upon his demobilisation and finally discharged in March 1920; sold together with a large quantity of comprehensive copied research.
