Henry Gammon was born on 3 September 1881 at Marwood, Barnstaple, Devon. He had been working as a farm labourer when he enlisted at Barnstaple on 18 September 1899. He served at the Depot in Deal until 11 July 1900 and saw service on Duke of Wellington from 4 December 1900 until 6 June 1901 and then on Mars from 3 July 1901 to 5 July 1904. Gammon served on Implacable from 9 September 1904 to 9 July 1906 and Aboukir from 5 March 1907 until 8 March 1909. He returned to the Plymouth Division 9 March-19 May 1909 and was discharged by Purchase.

Gammon enrolled into the Royal Fleet Reserve on 20 May 1909 and was mobilised on 3 August 1914 serving aboard Isis, where he stayed with until 28 December 1916. For the remainder of the war he served with the Plymouth Division and President III. Gammon was demobilised on 17 February 1919 but re-enrolled three days later to serve to the age of 40 and was demobilised again on 6 June 1921. Gammon received his Royal Fleet Reserve L.S. & G.C. in November 1921. He was discharged from the Royal Fleet Reserve on 3 September 1921 and was paid a £100 Gratuity. Gammon became a Postman and earned the Imperial Service Medal for his service.
