William Forbes was born on 16 March 1892 and was working as an apprentice painter when he enlisted with the Royal Naval Reserve as a recruit on 25 April 1913. He was rated Ordinary Signaller on 31 October 1913 and was mobilised in that role at Columbine on 9 August 1914, being advanced Signaller soon afterwards.
While Forbes does appear on the medal roll as entitled to the 1914-15 Star it is not clear where he saw active service during this period. The first service afloat listed is with the transport Ben Lawers on 1 April 1916. He was later to serve with the Polly Bridge between 2 May 1918-3 December 1919. Forbes was demobilised on 2 March 1919; sold together with copied medal roll and service papers.
