Arthur Reginald Martin was born at Clapham, London. At some stage he moved to South Africa and enlisted into the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in Durban on 24 September 1915. His South African Record of Service Form notes that he served in the Cape Station, North Sea and Aegean Sea. He completed his service in August 1919; sold together with copied service papers which confirm the issuing of his medals.
