Malcolm Galloway was born at Ealing, London in 1875 and qualified as a Second Mate with the Merchant Navy in 1895. Reaching the rank of Master in October 1900 he was later commissioned Sub-Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Reserve on 29 November 1914. Posted first to the armed merchant cruiser Oropesa he was promoted Lieutenant aboard her in January 1915.

Transferring to Gloucestershire on 8 February 1916 he joined the ship on patrol duties in the North Atlantic. When she was decommissioned the same year and returned to duties as a troop transport Galloway remained with her. He was demobilised on 19 July 1919; sold together with copied service papers and Merchant Navy papers.
