Frederick William Harris was born in 1879 at Mill Hill, Middlesex and enlisted with the 3rd Royal Berkshire Regiment from the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Oxford Light Infantry in June 1899. Harris was stationed in Gibraltar for nine months in 1900 before being moved to South Africa, where he served with his Regiment from 1900 until 1902. He was later posted to Egypt from 1902 to 1906, and was made Corporal shortly afterwards. Promoted Lance Serjeant in 1905, Harris moved to Tilehurst, Reading and married Helen Walters with whom he was living in Eastleigh, Hampshire according to the 1911 Census.
Harris was mobilised for the Western Front in August 1814 as part of a Special Reserve Battalion and was promoted Acting Serjeant the following month. He entered France on 18 March 1815 and joined the 2nd Royal Berkshires as part of the 25th Brigade, 8th Division and saw action just a few months later in May 1815 at the Battle of Aubers Ridge, which resulted in nearly 300 casualties of the unit. Harris returned home soon afterwards and was discharged with wounds, possibly inflicted during the battle; sold together with copied research.
