John Hutchison served with the 65th Battery during the Anglo-Boer War, this formation was present for the action at Magersfontein. They were mentioned as a formation by General Colville for their good work in the Battle of Paardeburg and continued to serve until the end of the war. Notably also serving as mounted infantry during 1902 where they took part with a number of sweeps in that final year.
Re-enlisting on 13 September 1914 entered the Great War in France on 20 December with the Royal Field Artillery at some stage transferring to the Royal Artillery. Hutchison was invalided from service as a result of sickness on 20 March 1917; sold together with copied medal rolls.
