One of 67 four bar Q.S.A.'s awarded to the Naval Brigade of H.M.S. Doris and one of 143 issued to the Royal Navy.
Richard Humphrey was born at Newhaven, Sussex on 16 December 1880 and enlisted with the Royal Navy as Boy Class II on 29 April 1896. Reaching his majority on 16 December 1898 he joined Doris on 19 January the next year.
Joining the famous Doris Naval Brigade during the Anglo-Boer War he was present for the Battle of Paardeburg where this formation captured the 'Doris Gun'. This Boer pompom gun was mounted upon a pedestal to form a memorial to the men of the Naval Brigade who fell in action.
Leaving the ship's company on 31 May 1901 he was advanced Leading Seaman on 5 May 1902 but was pensioned ashore in 3 October 1902. Joining the Royal Fleet Reserve on 17 July 1903 he was mobilised for service during the Great War on 2 August 1914.
Posted to the cruiser Bacchante he was to serve with her for the next two years, this vessel served off the Gallipoli peninsula providing fire support for much of 1915. Going ashore on 10 February he was invalided from service on 26 April 1916.
