While in South Africa, Bonner received a Mounted Infantry Certificate and was also made Lance Corporal, a position he held for only a few months before resigning. Bonner was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1902 and at some point returned home to Oxfordshire to marry Emma Hayes in 1904.
