Arthur Chitty served with the 5th Middlesex (Royal Elthorn Militia) in South Africa in 1902 before enlisting with the Royal Berkshires in November of that year. Chitty disembarked at Rouen in August 1914 with the 1st Royal Berkshires, 6th Brigade, 2nd Division and arrived at Mons later that month where the Regiment took an active role in the Battle of Mons. They retreated to the Marne before making their way to Ypres, seeing action at the First Battle of Ypres in October 1814. At the Battle of Loos on 28 September 1915, they were engaged in the quarries attack which resulted in nearly 300 deaths of the unit. Chitty was discharged soon after the battle due to the termination of his engagement together with wounds, likely inflicted at Loos and entitling him to a Silver War Badge; sold together with copied research.
