William Edwards was born at Bermondsey, London and was a carman prior to enlisting into the 19th Hussars on 13 May 1889 at Hounslow. He served in the East Indies from 1 September 1891 until returning home in January 1897, continuing to serve until 2 February when he joined the Army Reserve.

Recalled on 11 November 1899 he served in South Africa from 2 December 1899 initially with the 13th Hussars before later joining the 19th Hussars. Both the 13th and 19th Hussars saw heavy service in South Africa being involved in numerous 'drives' and many small skirmishes with Boer holdouts towards the end of the war. Returning home on the 12 March 1902, Edwards was finally discharged on 27 May 1902 and later died on 7 September 1936.
