Walter McQualter Girvan, also spelled "Walter McWalter Girvan", was born in Ayrshire, Scotland circa 1881 and enlisted at Ayr in 1899 with the 14th Hussars. He was posted to South Africa in October 1900 and there he remained until returning home in May 1903, he was later sent to India in September 1904. Girvan did not stay long in India, returning to England that November and transferring to the army reserve the following December. Girvan was discharged in 1911 with "very good" conduct, after which he worked as a postman.

Not long afterwards in February 1912, Girvan attested with the 13th Hussars and was posted to the Royal Horse Guards in August 1914, entering the Great War that October. At some point during the war Girvan joined the Guards Machine Gun Regiment; sold together with copied research and riband bar.
