Simon Lander Poad was born at Callington, Cornwall on 9 January 1865 and enlisted in the Royal Navy on 25 September 1884 as Stoker Class II. Seeing service with Triumph and Tamar he was posted to Alecto on 3 February 1893. With her he took part in the Gambia Expedition in 1894, against the slaver Fodi Silah.

Continuing to serve after the expedition he was advanced Leading Stoker on 10 July 1894 and Chief Stoker on 4 October 1899. Poad was pensioned in 1909 and joined the Royal Fleet Reserve not long later. Serving in that role he was first posted to Argonaut, stationed with the 9th Cruiser Squadron off Spain. Whilst he was with her she captured the German merchantman Graecia, however Poad was soon posted away, going ashore between September-November 1915. His next vessel was to be his final station, the diving tender Sabine which he served with until demobilisation on 15 February 1919.
